Hempel has announced the opening of a new production facility in Zhangjiagang, China, which the company says is designed to substantially enhance capacity to serve its marine, energy and infrastructure customers. The Zhangjiagang site, Hempel’s largest production site in the region, is online and servicing customers three years after the company broke ground in 2020.

“Getting Zhangjiagang online is a major step towards better serving our customers in the marine, energy and infrastructure sectors. This new location will significantly improve ‘time to market’ of both products and services – especially at the shipyards along the Yangtze,” says Katarina Lindstroem, Hempel’s chief operating officer and executive vice president.

According to the company, the majority of the world’s marine newbuild business, where antifouling coatings are in high demand, is in China; and more than 50% of Chinese shipyards are located within a 200km radius of the new facility. The Zhangjiagang factory will gradually increase capacity to reach 100 million liters annually in 2025, with the potential to further increase production to meet future demand.
